Wedding Wednesday! How to get the best possible wedding photos. Part 1 – SMILE! {NYC Wedding Photographer}

Have you ever caught your reflection in a mirror or window and been horrified at your “default resting face”? Um, I have. I can be totally content and happy with life, but my face does this thing.. I think it’s happened to the best of us.

You know what I’m talking about:

And it may a little horrifying to think that on your wedding day, multiple people will be following you with a camera and snapping away when you’re not even aware of it. And let’s be honest, weddings can be STRESSFUL. So, what can you do?

Well, the best and simplest trick is to remember to smile. And I don’t mean fake smile, or just “cheesin’ it” whenever you see the camera near you, or smiling when the photographer says “Smile!” – I mean the real, introspective, content smile that naturally appears when you’re thinking happy thoughts. It’s that feeling when you remember something funny and you catch yourself grinning in the middle of a crowded subway during rush hour. On your wedding day, it’s good to feel silly and amused and just keep that smile on your face as much as you can. And, thinking those happy thoughts and focusing on the positive will help with that whole stress thing, too.

As you’re getting your hair and makeup done, think about when you first met your fiance. Think about that first moment you saw each other, long before you knew you would know each other more than just for that moment.

Think about the day you got engaged. Or about a really memorable date, or that time he made you laugh so hard and it made you realize, OMG, I can’t live without this person.

Think about something funny that happened between you and your best friends, who are all there, surrounding you on your wedding day. The smile will naturally appear.

Remember that most of the day, you will be photographed in a candid fashion, when you’re not aware that you’re being photographed, and of course a skilled photographer will wait for the perfect moment and snap the shutter just as you’re smiling or laughing, but if you keep a genuine, happy smile on your face as you’re just enjoying the day, you’ll have more candid photos that you’ll love!

Try not to think about the little stressful things like if the flowers will be right, or if all the favors will be correctly distributed, or if the napkins will be folded just right. All that stuff – I promise you it will all be alright. Don’t even think about the weather – there’s nothing you can do if it rains or snows.

You know what? It’ll be OK. It will all work out, and at the end of the day, what matters most is that you just married your love, with everyone you care about in the same room, danced the night away, and looked absolutely stunning. So, just keep smiling, and have the best time of your life!
