870,000 never-before-seen vintage photos of NYC

This is so cool!

The city announced the debut of a photo database today featuring 870,000 photos of New York dating back to the mid-1880s.

The Department of Records put the link on its site making available to the public the photos on the Internet for the first time.

Culled from the Municipal Archives collection of more than 2.2 million images, the photographs feature all manner of city oversight — from stately ports and bridges to grisly gangland killings.
